The Second Enlightenment

Based in Scotland, the International Futures Forum was established in early 2001 to "explore new ways of operating effectively and responsibly in a world of boundless complexity, a world we no longer fully understand and cannot control." The IFF posits the need for a "second enlightenment" and has begun to develop a coherent body of e2 principles and praxis.

There are a handful of IFF tools which distill and present their ideas. Among them are the short pamphlet "Ten Things To Do In A Conceptual Emergency", a CD IFF Stuff (open source) and e2 Thinking Prompts (among them "What drives the system is belief" and "Beware the trance state of hyper-rationality").

What we have here are a broad set of design and operating principles that make sense in the peculiar light of insanity that we find ourselves labouring in. Use them.

"We live in the age of the missing elephent. Don Michael was first to point out the implications of a world of boundless complexity for the familiar tale of the blind men who if they could only see the whole would have recognised the elephant. No longer. In today's world the most advanced among us know little more than one small piece of the elephant, and now there are so many different pieces, they change so rapidly and they are all intimately related to one another, that even if we had the technology to put them together we would still not be able to make sense of the whole."

"In a conceptual emergency we tend to be driven into the control paradigm. And we often need a bit of that just to get things done. But we need to ensure that the culture of control finds its place within a culture of participation, rather than vice versa. For it is in the love loop that we find creativity, energy and the hidden human resources we need to cope with the unprecedented."
