Located in New Delhi, PeopleTree is one of my favourite 'studio-shops' -- the bookstore alone is amazing and a great little gateway to Indian literature, much of which can't be found on amazon.
I was delighted to find that they have as interesting an online presence as physical. The website includes an online store (art, craft, paper, clothes etc.), a bookshop, a fledging online magazine called Paperboat and an online studio featuring an artist every month.
Their story, to put it briefly, in their own words is:
"In New Delhi's old and famous Connaught Circle, during the early summer of 1990, a small group of designers, artists and friends managed with the help of a few fortunate coincidences to set up a studio-shop which was remarkably free from the impositions and demands of (heartless) markets and (artless) clients.
The ideas and experimentations that followed were the seed that grew to become the 'People Tree'. Today, all of us at People Tree take pride in our reputation as a small independent business which combines a sense of social purpose and ecological responsibility with the spirit of collective creativity. This has been the vision which has guided our work as a design, production and retail centre."
