Sony and other Japanese tech firms are developing a 51% paper DVD that can hold 25 gigabytes of data, be produced more cheaply than current DVDs, and increase data security--just cut it with a scissor when you're done. Reading this put me in mind of the biodegradable computers Bruce Sterling describes in his novel, Distraction. No mention of what the other 49% of the disc is composed of, and paper is not an ideal material in terms of ecological impact, but this strikes me as a step in the right direction.
