Travis Daub has a piece in Foreign Policy comparing the cost-per-hour at Internet cafés around the world with the percentage of national populations living on $1/day. While there isn't a strong direct correlation -- Ghana, with 26+% of its population living on $1/day, has some of the lowest average rates ($0.60/hour), while nearby Nigeria, with a similarly poor population, has far higher rates ($5.40/hour) -- the numbers are worth thinking about when considering how readily nations can leapfrog.
