Earthquake in the Northern Sumatra Region

Another strong earthquake (8.2 8.7) near Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. View specific data about the quake and its location at the USGS Earthquake Hazards site. The SEA-EAT blog information updates for the area. Sri Lanka is being evacuated. The U.S. State Department is in "battle mode" to ensure responsiveness. Another tsunami is possible, though none has been observed so far. We'll post updates here as we get more information.

Update, 1:40pm PT - three aftershocks reported:
6.0 in Nias Region, 5.5 in Simeulue, and 5.8 in Nias Region. There were also reports of a very small tsunami.
