Wired News has an extended piece on Bryan Roberts' "Tethered Turbines" and the difficulty finding investors for the project to launch high-altitude wind turbines, a cluster of flying electric generators or "windmills in the sky." Though the technology promises to provide substantial power by via sustained, strong high-altitude winds, it's been difficult so far to find investors: "The high risk of investment is associated in terms of length before you would see a return," said Stanley Stephenson, an economist for Litigation Economics, an economic and legal consulting firm. Stephenson said there is also the fear that larger organizations, even oil companies, could enter the market with alternative energy technologies, which makes it more difficult to find investors who are gung-ho for small venture startups.
