In the first week of July architects from all over the world will meet in Istanbul, Turkey for the World Congress on Architecture. While starchitects like Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas and Tadao Ando wax lyrical on the main stage, leading design and planning educators, practitioners, community leaders and policy makers who design for the other 99% of the world will be taking part in a 4 day symposium entitled, People Building Better Cities.
The event, with the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals in mind, will be kicked off by noted economist Jeffery Sachs and members of the UN Millennium Project Taskforce to Improve the Lives of Slum Dwellers. After which invited speakers will present their work and experience, and engage in dialogue with participants about the contributions design and planning professionals working with communities can make to improving the lives of the urban poor, and promoting environmental sustainability. Running in conjunction with the event is a two week long global studio for students from around the world.
The event culminates on July 8th for a one day forum to develop an agenda for international collaborations and partnerships, innovations in education, practice, research and community engagement.
