I don't freak out inordinately when I see a bug in my apartment, but this past summer, I've had to pull out the big guns. And since I didn't want my apartment doused with potent pesticides, that meant keeping the exterminator out and applying a ton of elbow grease and safer but slow-acting substances. Having thus sunk a good deal of time and energy into least-toxic pest control, I'm pretty psyched to learn that soon I may be able to find an exterminator who thinks the same. Green Shield is a new certification for professionals who want to kill bugs without the toxic chemicals, and it's been endorsed by the Natural Resources Defense Council.
