Data from Global Footprint Network and UK-based partner NEF (the new economics foundation) shows that starting in the mid 1980s humanity’s Ecological Footprint has been bigger than what the planet can supply, and we have been adding more to our ecological debt each year. ... Today, with Ecological Dept day falling on October 6th, our overshoot is 30 percent.

It is, of course, important to remember that this is a global figure, while individually our footprints are wildly inequitable.

What would be interesting would be an application that assessed your footprint (including your public footprint) and sent you a message on the day that you, personally, had exceeded your share of the carrying capacity of the Earth. For many of us, our phones would ring pretty early in the year.
