Magazine Review: ASPECT - The Chronicle of New Media Art

ASPECT is a biannual DVD publication. Each issue highlights 5-10 artists working in new or experimental media, whose works are best documented in video or sound. The works can be viewed with or without an additional commentator audio track. I don't care much for DVDs. I already spend too much time in front of my laptop screen as it is but ASPECT won me over. Think of it as an intelligently-curated exhibition you can visit in the company of eloquent guides. You can either watch the video...

Rien Ne Va Plus at Bureau Europa in Maastricht

Credit photo: Johannes Schwartz In 1999, Andrew Lawrence invented the Skyscraper Index. According to him, there is a correlation between the construction of the world's tallest buildings and the impending end of business cycles. A good example is the Great Depression which followed a skyscraper boom. The Empire State Building was finished in 1929 but didn't achieve full occupancy for 40 years. Lawrence believes that the construction of a new record-breaking skyscraper goes hand in hand with...

Moving Rainbow

BOZAR - Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels was the first cultural centre of its kind to be constructed in Europe. Its exterior is gloomy but not quite as much as its neighbours the Central Station, the awful shopping gallery nearby and the Royal Palace. The inside though is luminous, amazingly intricate, and art deco. It was designed by Victor Horta. The programme is far from being the most adventurous and exciting in the world but there are little gems of exhibitions once in a while. STILL...

Feedforward. The Angel of History. Part 2: Globalization and Agency

The future seen from here is gloomy. It is made of ecological disasters, political tensions, economical apartheid, overpopulation and promises never fulfilled. Feedforward, the exhibition opened a couple of weeks ago at the Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, offers space for artist to reflect and comment on the global political and social forces that drive us forward. Image courtesy Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial In a previous post, Feedforward. The...

Feedforward. The Angle of History. Part 1: Wreckage and Countermeasures

Previous posts about this exhibition: Instances of Use of United States Armed Forces Abroad 1798-2006 and Smoke and Hot Air. Feedforward. The Angel of History, a compelling exhibition that opened a few weeks ago at LABoral in Gijón, addresses the current moment in history where the wreckage of political conflict and economic inequality is piling up, while globalized forces--largely enabled by the "progress" of digital information technologies--inexorably feed us forward. The exhibition...

Mark Amerika retrospective at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens

While in Athens, i checked out the Mark Amerika retrospective at The National Museum of Contemporary Art. How could i miss it? I knew so little about Amerika, an artist who, as the press release reminds, had been described as one of the "Time Magazine 100 Innovators" of the 21st century. Society of the Spectacle (Digital Remix). Created by DJ RABBI : Mark Amerika, Trace Reddell, Rick Silva Amerika describes himself as a "thoughtographer", an "artist-medium", a "fictional philosopher", a...

East of Nowhere - Contemporary Art From Post-Soviet Central Asia

No matter how hard i try to keep in touch with what is going on in Turin, i always seem to do an awful job. Latest openings in London, Berlin, Eindhoven, San Diego or Venice? Easy peasy. But Turin does its best to keep me bored and uninformed. I discovered only a few days ago, as i was taking the plane to Graz (did you know Arnold Schwarzenegger comes from there?), that here was a fantastic exhibition in town. It had opened in May and i managed to visit it yesterday morning, a few hours after...

Book Review - Installations by Architects: Experiments in Building and Design

Installations by Architects: Experiments in Building and Design, by Sarah Bonnemaison and Ronit Eisenbach (Amazon USA and UK.) Publisher Princeton Architectural Press says: Over the last few decades, a rich and increasingly diverse practice has emerged in the art world that invites the public to touch, enter, and experience the work, whether it is in a gallery, on city streets, or in the landscape. Like architecture, many of these temporary artworks aspire to alter viewers' experience of the...

Instances of Use of United States Armed Forces Abroad 1798-2006

Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón, North of Spain has opened a very very very good exhibition a few days ago. FEEDFORWARD - The Angel of History addresses the current moment in history where the wreckage of political conflict and economic inequality is piling up, while globalized forces--largely enabled by the "progress" of digital information technologies--inexorably feed us forward. I'll write about it in details in the near future but i'd like to share with you...
