A Society Is Its Communications

The people in a society are just individuals, unless they have communications. And communications increasingly depend on the Internet.

Net neutrality has been a popular topic around Austin lately, including this panel:

Net Neutrality: Consumers, Choice, and Peering

A panel discussion of Net Neutrality and Policy.

When: 6:30 PM, Thursday 2 November 2006

Where: Austin Java, 1608 Barton Springs, patio in back on the north side.

Panelists:

Moderator: Austin Bay, syndicated columnist, author, and game creator

Hank Hultquist: Assistant VP, Emerging Services & Technologies, AT&T

Michael Hathaway: Router Hardware and Internet Startups

John S. Quarterman: Internet Business Risk Management

Mike Hathaway's position summary, as an example:

"It is critical that consumer demand not be lost in the crossfire between Industry and Consumer Groups. Equally critical is that bandwidth and capacity requirements for the looming a-la-carte digital video market is taken into account when determining what the requirements for consumer broadband services in the near future. Lastly, it is important to leverage the efficiencies of packet network delivery of digital content going forward to optimize services and content delivered to consumers at the lowest cost possible."
It's a complicated subject, beyond the usual slogans, so we'll try to elucidate. The more questions, the clearer it will get.
