

Andrew Hessel is a writer, speaker and consultant on DNA technologies, with clients that include leading academic, government, and industry groups in Canada and the US.
A key interest is synthetic biology, a science based on DNA synthesis that is making living systems easy to engineer. Andrew's work is empowering a new generation of researchers and companies to tackle larger, biology-based tasks including sustainable fuel production, environmental cleanup, pandemics and cancer.
He is a strong supporter of open source for accelerating innovation. He has recently founded an cooperative biotechnology venture that will make individualized medicines for breast cancer. He is an advisor to the MIT international Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) program and to the Singularity University, which aims to train leaders to understand exponentially advancing technologies and apply them to address humanity's grand challenges.
