John Lewis is a Calgary-based urban planner who is always looking to find more sustainable ways of doing things. John founded Intelligent Futures (www.intelligentfutures.ca) in 2008 to provide lasting sustainability solutions that have strategic value within their client's culture. For the past 4+ years, John has been busy in the emerging field of community sustainability planning. He has been involved in imagineCALGARY – winner of the 2007 FCM-CH2M Hill Award for Sustainable Community Planning and the 2007 AUMA Sustainable Community Planning - Innovator Community Award – from inception to current day implementation. Engaging over 18,000 citizens in the visioning process, imagineCALGARY is widely regarded as the largest civic visioning process ever done in the world. John is also leading the development of the Cochrane (Alberta) Sustainability Plan, which has directly engaged 85 citizens in the development of their community sustainability plan.
While at the City of Calgary for 6 years, John also has worked as a community education planner, development planner, land use planner and was the primary author of the City of Calgary's Transit Oriented Development Policy Guidelines. A strong believer in continuous development, John is active in professional and academic learning, leading course development and providing instruction in the Urban Studies Program and the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary, instructing in the City Program at Simon Fraser University, and speaking at a variety of professional conferences. John is also a Member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and a LEAD (Leadership in Environment and Development) Fellow.
John holds a Bachelor Degree in Environmental Studies (Honours) from York University and a Master's Degree in Environmental Design (Planning) from the University of Calgary.
