With common-sense applications in both commercial and residential real estate, green building is the future of sustainable urban development. The day-to-day operation of buildings accounts for some 40 percent of all greenhouse gases, and soaring towers reach ever higher in skylines around the world. Here in Chicago, the local US Green Building Council chapter, a nonprofit organization dedicated to furthering the implementation of sustainable building techniques and practices, operates at the forefront of the green building trend.
The USGBC, which sets out the requirements for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, has released the 2007 schedule for Chicago-area green building workshops. Although this system is just one of many that measures a building's sustainability quotient, LEED remains the most widely accepted environmental program in the country -- and as such, it gets the best recognition and the enjoys the most favorable media coverage.
These Chicago chapter workshops are geared for construction and architecture professionals, but the 1/30/2007 event is also an excellent introduction to the world of green building. Despite the cost, these sessions are well worth it if you run a small business or are otherwise able to write off the cost. The USGBC is also particularly friendly to journalists, so members of the working media should ask about press credentials.
Here's the vital information pasted from the USGBC's media packet:
