Brazilian artist Adriana Bertini might be one of the only people in the world who’s thrilled when a condom breaks.
The 35-year old former fashion designer — mastermind behind the provocative “Dress Up Against AIDS” exhibit currently on display at UCLA’s Fowler museum — sews (or mashes, or cuts, or glues, or weaves) defective condoms into delicate, sophisticated eveningwear.
As Bertini told UCLA Today, her condom couture is a tongue and cheek jab at puritanism, meant to encourage dialogue on healthy sexuality and HIV/AIDS awareness.
It’s also some of the most creative recycling we’ve seen in a while — her wedding dress alone saved 80,000 condoms from the landfill.
Catch the ethereally beautiful exhibit (along with other works staged to coincide with World AIDS Day on December 1) at the Fowler through March 11th.
