Get ready for a Coachella for environmentalists, sort of. Lightning in a Bottle 2007, an environmentally-conscious, 3-day music and art festival featuring three stages and more than 40 musical and performance acts, happens May 11 - 13, 2007, in Santa Barbara.
Lightning in a Bottle may be too crunchy for some, but it also promises to be both environmentally-forward and innovative. Conceived by The Do LaB, a downtown LA-based event company, this second annual event will be powered almost entirely by solar energy -- via an onsite solar panel installation created through a partnership with Energy Efficiency Solar -- and biodiesel. The Do Lab says "the event will also incorporate a large-scale recycling program, flyers and promotional materials will use “tree free” and low-VOC printing, and 100% biodegradable plates and kitchenware will be used in the food vending area."
The musical performers are likely unknown to many, but seem to have steady, if small, followings. LA’s own Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque will perform, as well as Bassnectar, Kid Beyond, and many others. In addition, March Fourth, a 35-person marching band from Portland, Oregon, will lead a large-scale interactive parade. And if you need a break from the music, you can take part in the many workshops, from glass blowing to belly dancing to sustainable living.
Lightning in a Bottle will happen at Live Oak Campground, 4600 Hwy 154, Santa Barbara, CA. Full weekend 3-day festival passes -- which include on-site camping, workshops, and seminars -- cost between $80-$120 on the festival's website, or $130 at the box office on the weekend of the event. One-day passes will only be sold on the day of the event at the festival box office; prices for day passes have not yet been announced.
