With the National Day of Climate Action falling just eight days before Earth Day 2007, the Los Angeles area's abuzz with a week-long cornucopia of environmentally-conscious events and activities. In fact, Santa Monica celebrated Earth Day early with today's Earth Day on the Promenade, featuring a performance state, a green car display, and 60 booths of environmentally-oriented companies and organizations.
Shoppers could pick between hemp and organic cotton fashions at Natural High Lifestyle and Clothing of the American Mind, drink some organic and fair trade Steaz tea, then test the paraben-free lotions at Shidon Naturals.
The car-obsessed could try sitting in a teensy eco-car, check out the engine of Toyota hybrids, and even sign up their teenagers for eco-friendly driving lessons at Drivers Ed Direct.
Environmental activists could find out the goings-on at groups ranging from the National Resources Defense Council to the Santa-Monica specific Sustainable Works to the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.
Best of all, the event brought environmentalism in front of a wide variety of people, many of whom happened by the event by chance. Tourists shopping on the Third Street Promenade, farmers' market shoppers picking out organic produce on Arizona Ave., and die-hard environmentalists all converged at this event.
