Hot on the green heels of the Newport Beach Film Festival, the east side's putting on its own green film program. The Silver Lake Film Festival's green effort, dubbed "Sustainable LA," will feature three eco-minded films, lots and lots of shorts, a green panel discussion, an eco-expo, and of course, eco-celebrities including Daryl Hannah, Alicia Silverstone, and Ed Begley, Jr.
Filmgoers can catch Everything's Cool, "an entertaining, character-driven, behind-the-scenes tale about the mother of all problems: global warming," on Saturday, May 5 at 4:45 pm, and Wednesday, May 9 at 9:45 pm.
The other two green-themed feature films are The Power of Community, which shows Cuba's transition from an industrial, pesticide-based land to a country of small organic gardens after losing over half its oil imports in the 1990s, and Freedom Fuels, which looks at renewable fuel sources, exploring their histories and examining their potentials in the future. These films will screen back to back on Saturday, May 5 at 11:45 am. A Q & A with Martin O’Brien, Ed Begley, Jr. and Darryl Hannah will be held after the screening.
A few short eco-films will play before these screenings; in addition, a Short Films Program, put together by the nonprofit media organization Echo Park Film Center, will offer a mélange of green shorts -- on everything from Cold Storage to Fallen Fruit to Lovecraft Biodiesel -- played in a row on Sunday, May 6, at 11:30 am.
The Film Festival will also feature a Sustainable LA panel discussion, with Ed Begley Jr., Alicia Silverstone, and other green-minded people in the LA-area. The panel -- followed by an after-party -- will happen on Sunday, May 6, starting at 4 pm at the Offices of Lehrer Architects, 2140 Hyperion Ave. in Los Angeles.
All the film screenings mentioned above will take place at The Los Feliz 3, 1822 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles. For more details on the films and events or to purchase tickets, visit the Silver Lake Film Festival site.
