For those of you who left the film, “An Inconvenient Truth” feeling more despondent than inspired, Al Gore has come around for you. Yesterday I attended a handful of 50 short films – all about the environment, and yes, sponsored by SOS, an organization supported by Gore in an attempt to give people the tools to cool this global warming thing.
I had no expectations of this event, and in truth, attended mostly to support an acquaintance of mine who was the subject of the short entitled “Dave.” (Dave is into biodiesel so the filmmakers sought him out.) I missed his short but saw others, and I must say I was impressed. There was actually heart/art happening up there on the screen. Topics varied from a music video type look at the evolution of life (and how human ignorance is affecting it) to the coal industry in Brazil to a lovely little community in England who has dubbed themselves the first carbon neutral town. Oh, and there was an homage to cyclists in New York City that received a few hoots from the audience.
You may have heard of some of the filmmakers too: Madonna, Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix, Chad Lowe. Not that I’m dropping names or anything.
SOS is part of this whole Live Earth thing that I’m sure you all have heard about. A man named Kevin Wall rounded up 150 performers to entertain the planet and bring to our attention our part in the planetary crisis – in a fun, cool way of course. That happens on 07.07.07 or July 7th, 2007. Does anyone have tickets and airfare to share with me?
So, kudos to the Los Angeles Film Festival for showing these shorts, and kudos to those in attendance who want to expand their horizons and give back to the Earth. And kudos to the green movement. It keeps getting better.
