Ekovaruhuset Opens Stateside

Article Photo

The night after the Worldchanging party, the new eco-boutique, Ekovaruhuset, opened on the Lower East Side (at 123 Ludlow to be exact). The NYC store has and older sister store in Stockholm, Sweden, which was blogged on Eco Chick a few months back, so I was really excited to see the U.S. sibling.

Johanna Hofring (above), the owner of Ekovaruhuset, brings her Swedish sensibility and style to New York, along with beautiful handmade and organic clothes and accessories.

I got to chat with Johanna about her new store, and she mentioned she hopes to include more local designers in the future (right now many of the designs are Scandinavian in origin). The store was packed with designers, media folks, friends and well-wishers, and lots of organic wine was enjoyed, along with Johanna's amazing homemade chocolate truffles. I'll be checking back with Johanna in a few weeks to find out how her collection is evolving.

This shirt, by Mika Machida, kept catching my eye all night.

What a great shirt -- so *not* the "hemp tunic" sort of thing that used to be typical of "organic and fair trade."

How do you think Johanna's sensibility will play in NYC, Starre?
