While Worldchanging usually covers the ultra-cutting-edge, new fangled technology aspect of creating a better future for ourselves, I thought I'd remind you that there are also some good old-fashioned ways to be change-makers. This upcoming weekend marks the advent of the 12th annual Anarchist Bookfair in San Francisco. This event, that will be held in Golden Gate Park next Saturday and Sunday, might be a throwback to some earlier era, perhaps closer to the 1890s than the 1990s (when the fair was established). But its persistence goes to show that good old-fashioned DIY/collectivist spirit still has the potential to empower and inspire us as activists.
The bookfair not only promises oodles of one-of-a-kind zines, nifty prints, and underground literature, but it also plays host to a full line-up of speakers and panel discussions about activism, literature, and the future of publishing. Some of the more ubiquitous faces of the San Francisco literary underground, such as author Michelle Tea, will be giving readings. Editor of the new feminist anthology We Don't Need Another Wave and The F-Word zine, Melody Berger, will be hosting a panel on feminism. A few of the many panel discussions that will be taking place over the course of the two day fair include, "Critical Resistance and Alternative Media", "Realizing the Impossible: A Discussion on Art and Anarchism", and "Connecting the Big Picture to the Little Picture,” a panel on the intersection between globally and locally focused activism.
